You’ve probably heard about the dangers of blue light before but you might not know exactly what it is or what it does. This light is produced by many types of lights including, light bulbs, computer screens, and even sunglasses. What makes blue light dangerous is that it is the color of death. It is so powerful that the rays can actually pass through some materials and still cause death. The amount of time that it takes to fade these rays is called exposure time.

There are several different forms of macular degeneration, including glaucoma and retinal detachment. For someone to experience macular degeneration, they must have been exposed to high levels of blue light over an extended period. White light is comprised of all other colors except for the blue end, which makes blue light exposure dangerous. Screens create blue light in much higher concentrations than what the human eye can perceive.
People who work on computers or use very intense blue wavelengths
for long periods are, particularly at risk. It has been found that individuals who work in a cubicle for eight hours or more each day suffer from poor vision as well as sleep disruption and lack of concentration. Individuals who are constantly exposed to these high blue wavelengths are at risk for a serious condition known as macular degeneration.
Another cause of macular degeneration
is a poor vision brought about by circadian disruption? When a person’s circadian system becomes out of sync, they may struggle to get the proper amount of rest and do enough to maintain a healthy lifestyle. It is believed that the constant display of blue light from computers, television sets, and other sources might disrupt this system. Without good sleep, normal vision can become a problem.
When people try to go to sleep
but are unable to do so because their body is so restless, they are at risk of being deprived of vital nutrients. If their food and water intake are cut short, their body will not be able to replenish itself as it should. These disruptions in sleep cycles are a direct link to the lack of nutrients. To prevent such a thing from happening, individuals should take the time to observe their sleep cycles and adjust their circadian rhythms accordingly. If proper nutrition is not obtained through normal sleep cycles, blue light exposure will have the effect of disrupting those natural sleep cycles.
A recent study revealed that an elderly woman
with cataracts had suffered disruption in her sleep patterns and was found to have a decreased ability to restore herself to a normal rhythm after going to bed. When she was exposed to light, she fell asleep faster, suffered disruption in the timing of her light pulses, and experienced a disruption in circadian rhythms. This case highlights the need for individuals to seek immediate medical assistance if they have fallen asleep with light exposure. If medical intervention is not taken, these symptoms may only continue to worsen.
