Choosing Between Types of Body Armor
Just like any garment you wear on your torso, body armor is bound to become dirty over time. You don’t want to be washing body armor for several months now and then. That means that as much as possible, you want to keep it clean. Follow these simple cleanliness tips to clean your body armor.
First, check the carrier
If it has any dirt, dust, or dried oil on it, you can clean it using a damp cloth. Wash it with soap and water, and dry it carefully before putting it back onto your body armor.
Second, check the weather conditions
Will you be wearing your body armor in extremely cold temperatures, or warm temperatures? Determine whether you will be comfortable wearing it during these extreme conditions. If the material is intended for wearing in cold weather conditions, you might consider purchasing a vest with a thicker, warmer lining.
Third, consider washing the body armor yourself
There are different methods available for washing armor plates in your home. In general, you can either wash them in the washing machine or hang them to dry on a line. If you plan on washing them in the washing machine, there are a few quick tips to follow to ensure that the material will last through the cycle. Start by placing the plates on a washing machine handle with the legs parallel to the middle of the handle.
After washing the armor in the washing machine
set it aside to air dry. The next step is to place it on a dry towel and pull on the excess fabric, making sure that it is pulled all the way down the garment. You can then use your soft-bristled brush to polish the plate and remove any dirt or debris that may have stuck to the metal during the drying process. Once the plate has dried, you can now attach the straps or can even use snaps to secure the sections together. If you have pre-made ballistic panels, you may want to check the instructions to determine how to assemble them. Installation is easy when using pre-fabricated pieces, but if you are attaching custom or special-shaped items, you may need to consult the instructions provided with your particular piece.
Finally, inspect your piece before wearing it
to ensure that it is intact. One way to check is to press the butt-end of the body armor towards your body for several seconds. If it springs back, replaces the piece with a new one. To clean your piece, use a mild detergent, such as Dawn dishwashing soap and warm water. Rinse and dry the piece before wearing it again.
